Tara India Fund III, a US$ 225 mn Fund sponsored by IL&FS, was a continuation of IIML's strategy of providing capital to middle-market companies to Fund their growth plans. Tara India Fund III, which closed in 2008, builds on the successful growth capital investment strategy of its predecessor Funds – the AIG India Sectoral Equity Fund and the Leverage India Fund.

With the fundamental economic drivers in place, Indian entrepreneurs running small to mid sized companies look to private equity as the source of value added capital for their expansion programmes and to acquire global capability.

The fund invested in a diversified portfolio of private equity investments in India. Majority of the Fund’s capital has been invested in growth opportunities including expansions, restructuring and acquisitions. The Fund has made 13 investments across six target industries viz. Infrastructure, Consumer Services, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Infrastructure Services and Agriculture. The Fund’s investment size has ranged from US$ 8 mn to around 20 mn for each portfolio company.

Apart from Indian and Global investors from the US, Europe and Middle East, the Fund has also been structured to accommodate high network family offices and individuals from India and across the globe.

The Fund has already undertaken 6 exits.
